Industrial evaluation of design heuristics for additive manufacturing

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained prominence over the last 15 years and become a viable option. Since there is great industrial interest to implement serial production of products using AM, education engineers in design for additive (DfAM) important today. DfAM extends on provide knowledge about new opportunities enabled by AM. A set heuristics (DHAM) assist designers with conceptual-level previously been proposed. In this paper, these DHAM are evaluated through workshops 3 engineering companies 19 engineers, which participants re-design existing company AM as an aid, then give feedback. The well received workshop participants, they find that good teaching others capabilities checklist items consider help avoid oversights, encourage generation ideas. Criticisms include number examples provided lack information how ideas concretely. It also found fulfil 16 18 criteria early phase methods, identified academic literature.
